A Monster in our Newsrooms

Well, here it is. The culmination of the past 7 weeks of research and reading on the topic of focus and attention. This is the first time I’ve ever written a white paper, and it was quite the undertaking.

I opted to write about how focus impacts work inside the newsroom, and how solving burnout and finding flow can repair these issues. To do so, I conducted interviews with people in the industry and analyzed research and news articles, tying all of that into what I’ve learned reading Stolen Focus by Johann Hari plus other articles on focus.

I began by creating an outline of what I wanted to touch on, spanning from the problem with journalism now, to the solutions, limitations, and how newsrooms can realistically implement them. Then using my research I wrote the paper and edited it. Afterwards, I took my writing into Canva and created the layout of my document. I also used Canva for the graphs, but used Adobe Illustrators for other graphics including the cover.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t apprehensive beginning this project, but I am really happy with how it ended up turning out. I also understand that it’s maybe a little strange of me to be criticizing an industry I want to work in so badly, but trust, I do it out of love and care for the future of the press. I think this paper shares some good information on how to stay sane as a journalist in today’s world, and disseminates it in a visually pleasing way.
